Five athletes and five teams who made an impact on the local preps scene this past week:
Five athletes
Lincoln Fagerlin, Resurrection Christian track and field: The Cougars sophomore won the 800-meter run in a new meet record time at the Weld County Championships on Saturday at Roosevelt High School in Johnstown.
Fagerlin, who finished second in the Class 3A 800 at last year’s state meet, crossed the line in 1 minute, 56.72 seconds. His 800 time of 1:56.07 he ran at the Pomona Invitational is still the fastest in 3A this season.
JJ Phillips, Mountain View swimming/track and field: The Mountain Lions senior set a pair of pool records in Windsor on Thursday and then won the 400 meters at the Longmont Invitational track meet Friday.
In a tri-meet with Windsor and Loveland, Phillips won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.20, breaking the Windsor High School Natatorium record of 21.20 he set the week prior. He also won the 100 freestyle in a pool record time of 46.39, the second fastest time in Class 4A this season. Friday in Longmont, he won the 400 in 49.82.
Zack Bakker, Thompson Valley track and field: The Eagles senior set a new PR and won the pole vault at the NoCo Qualifier hosted by Berthoud on Tuesday at Max Marr Stadium.
Bakker’s winning vault of 16 feet, 5 inches was a personal best by almost a foot. He now has the second-best vault in Class 4A this season and the third-best among all classifications.
Jackson Conroy, Loveland track and field: The Red Wolves senior set a personal best with a wind-aided 13.40 in the 110 hurdles Friday in the preliminaries of the Liberty Bell Invitational and then went on to win the final Saturday.
His prelim time with a 2.1 wind reading would have been a new state record if the reading had been 2.0 or below. He won the event Saturday in 13.68. His time of 13.54 he ran at the Pomona Invitational is still the best in the state this season among all classifications.
Tatum Van Pelt, Resurrection Christian track and field: The Cougars junior had two big meets last week, winning two individual events at the NoCo Qualifier in Berthoud on Tuesday and then one at the Weld County Championships on Saturday in Johnstown.
In Berthoud on Tuesday, Van Pelt won the 100 meters in 12.57 and the 200 in a personal best and school-record time of 25.43. Saturday in Johnstown, she won the 400 in 57.69, just off her personal best of 57.39 she ran at the Pomona Invitational, which is the fastest time in 3A this season.
Five teams
Loveland baseball: The Red Wolves defeated Thompson Valley on Saturday, 6-5 in eight innings, to claim their fifth straight victory in the series between the two crosstown rivals.
Loveland’s Lincoln McFadden scored the winning run on a double by Easton Hoefler in the top of the eighth inning. Cole Underwood started for Loveland and allowed four runs (one earned) and struck out four in six innings. Wes Cheever pitched the final two, allowing one run and striking out three, including the last two Eagles he faced.
Berthoud girls soccer: The Spartans won three games last week to improve their overall record to 8-3-1 with three games remaining in the regular season.
On Tuesday, Berthoud defeated Roosevelt 3-0. Thursday, the Spartans defeated Wellington 6-1 and Friday, the won against Mountain Range 6-3. The victory over Mountain Range clinched the team’s first winning record in at least 17 years. At No. 15 in the CHSAA Selection & Seeding Index, Berthoud should make its first playoff appearance since 2006.
Thompson Valley girls track and field: The Eagles finished fourth with 65 points at the Ram Charger Invitational on Saturday at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood.
Individually for Thompson Valley, Kiera Schra was first in the long jump (16-9), fourth in the high jump (4-11) and sixth in the 300 hurdles (49.73). Courtney Trainor was second in the 100 hurdles (16.41) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (49.28). Carson Chou was third in the triple jump (34-4) and fifth in the 100 hurdles (17.86).
Mountain View boys volleyball: The Mountain Lions avenged their only league loss last Tuesday with a three-set victory over Stargate School. They followed that up with a three-set victory over Eagle Ridge Academy on Wednesday.
At 18-4 overall and 13-1 in the Northern 4A league, the Mountain Lions have clinched at least a share of the league title going into their final regular season and league contest Tuesday at Forge Christian. At No. 3 in the Class 4A Selection & Seeding Index, Mountain View will host a regional for the first time in program history this weekend.
Resurrection Christian girls golf: The Cougars dominated the Sterling Invitational on Wednesday at Sky Ranch Golf Club, winning with a score of 237, 50 strokes better than second-place Fort Morgan (287).
Individually, Addy Moreno, Avery Stockslager and Brittyn Goings all tied for first place with a 79. By a scorecard tiebreaker, Goings was first, Moreno second and Stockslager third. Karina Garcia was one stroke behind the three, carding an 80 to finish fourth.
