Five athletes and five teams who made an impact on the local preps scene this past week:
Five athletes
Jaya Hickey, Mountain View golf: The Mountain Lions junior carded a career low at the Olde Course on Tuesday and then won a three-team event with Loveland and Thompson Valley on Thursday at Mariana Butte.
At the Longs Peak League tournament hosted by Berthoud on Tuesday, she recorded an 84 to tie for third place. Her score beat her previous career best by three strokes. On Thursday, she carded a 94 at Mariana Butte to win the individual title and lead the Mountain Lions to first place as a team.
Ava Wankelman, Loveland track and field: The Red Wolves sophomore won the pole vault at the Randall Hess Roughrider Invitational on Saturday in Johnstown with a new personal record.
Wankelman cleared a career-best 12 feet to win the event by nine inches. Her previous best had been 11-7. She is now tied for second in the state and is alone in second in Class 5A this season. Only one girls vaulter in Colorado has cleared a height over 12 feet.
Addy Moreno, Resurrection Christian girls golf: The Cougars freshman won the first tournament of her varsity career at the Fort Morgan League/East Invitational on Monday at Quail Dunes Golf Course.
Moreno shot a 1-over-par 75 to win the individual title by two strokes. Entering the week, she is ranked No. 6 in Class 2A. The Cougars finished second as a team at Quail Dunes, seven strokes behind first-place Riverdale Ridge.
Ashton Daly, Loveland track and field: The Red Wolves junior won both throwing events, setting a meet and stadium record with a personal best in one of them, at the Randall Hess Roughrider Invitational on Saturday.
Daly threw the discus 174-4, setting a new meet and stadium record in the process. It was also a PR and the second farthest throw in the state and best in Class 5A this season. Earlier in the day, he also won the shot put with a heave of 55-1.5.
Madeline Clark, Mountain View track and field: The Mountain Lions senior continued her record-breaking season Saturday at the Randall Hess Roughrider Invitational.
Clark won the 400 meters in a stadium-record time of 56.08 seconds, just .01 ahead of the second-place finisher, Addyson Smith of Fossil Ridge. Not only did she lower her school record in the event, but her time was the eighth fastest in the state this season and fourth fastest in Class 4A.
Five teams
Mountain View baseball: The Mountain Lions won both of their games last week against Northridge and Wellington to extend their winning streak to three.
On Wednesday, Mountain View defeated Northridge 14-0 in five innings. Cam Smith went the distance on the mound, allowing no runs on four hits with three strikeouts. On Saturday, the Mountain Lions defeated Wellington 2-1. On the mound, Sam Holt allowed a run on three hits and struck out seven.
Thompson Valley boys track and field: The Eagles finished fourth with 52 points at the Randall Hess Roughrider Invitational on Saturday in Johnstown, three points behind third-place Loveland.
Isaac Vasquez won the 1,600 meters in a meet and stadium-record time of 4 minutes,12.06 seconds. Antheny Herre was third and under the old meet record in the 800 in 1:55.41. Zack Bakker won the pole vault, clearing 15-3, and Jayden Mandile was third in the 3,200 in 9:53.61.
Resurrection Christian baseball: The Cougars won three games last week by a combined score of 54-5 to extend their winning streak to four games and get to .500 on the season.
On Monday, RCS defeated Platte Valley 22-1. Wednesday, the Cougars defeated Weld Central 9-1 and on Thursday, they defeated Strasburg 23-3. They are now 7-7 this season with only one loss in Patriot League play.
Thompson Valley girls tennis: The Eagles won a pair of duals last week, defeating Timnath on Tuesday to clinch their second consecutive conference championship and then crosstown rival Loveland on Thursday.
Against the Cubs, the Eagles swept the singles matches and took two of the four doubles matches. Against the Red Wolves, the Eagles won two of the three singles matches and swept the four doubles matches.
Loveland girls soccer: The Red Wolves won their only game last week, 3-1 over Poudre on Tuesday, to move over .500 for the first time this season at 6-5.
Junior Makenna Bruno scored a pair of goals and had an assist for Loveland against the Impalas, giving her 17 goals and 43 points on the season. She leads Class 5A in both categories. Freshman Berkley Henry had the other goal for the Red Wolves against Poudre.
