Five athletes and five teams who made an impact on the local preps scene this past week:

Five athletes

Elena Montoya, Thompson Valley soccer: The Eagles sophomore recorded a hat trick in the Eagles’ season-opening win over Loveland on Tuesday.

Last year’s leading scorer for Thompson Valley scored her first goal in the first half and her last two in the second as the Eagles turned a 1-0 halftime lead into a 5-0 victory.

Devyn Sell, Loveland baseball: The Red Wolves senior provided a chunk of the offense in Loveland’s 12-10 victory over Mountain Range on Tuesday.

Sell went 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk. He also scored three times and drove in four runs as the Red Wolves picked up their first win of the season against the Mustangs.

Madeline Clark, Mountain View track and field: The Mountain Lions senior recorded a pair of top-five finishes at the Murray Kula Invitational on Saturday in Windsor.

Clark finished second in the 400 meters, clocking a time of 58.06 seconds. She was also fifth in the 200 meters, finishing the race in 26.01.

Egan Koenig, Resurrection Christian basketball: The Cougars senior, playing in the final game of his high school career, scored a team-high 26 points in RCS’ overtime loss to Banning Lewis Academy in the Great 8 of the Class 3A state tournament Thursday at the University of Denver.

Koenig was 10-for-16 from the field and 2-for-3 from behind the 3-point line in the game. He also scored his 1,000th career point in the contest.

Jayce Newbill, Berthoud Track and Field: The Spartans senior recorded a pair of top-two finishes at the Murray Kula Invitational in Windsor on Saturday.

Newbill finished second in his signature event, the high jump, with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches. Then, he finished second in the long jump with a leap of 22-1. His 16 points contributed to the Spartans’ total of 27, good for 11th place out of 24 teams at the meet.

Five teams 

Resurrection Christian girls golf: The Cougars won the Chilly Chili Invitational at The Broadlands in Broomfield on Saturday with a score of 247, six better than second-place Riverdale Ridge.

Individually for the Cougars, senior Karina Garcia was second with a 79. Freshman Addy Moreno tied for fifth with an 82 and freshman Brittyn Goings tied for eighth with an 86.

Thompson Valley boys track and field: The Eagles finished second at the Murray Kula Invitational in Windsor on Saturday with 62 points, seven fewer than first-place Rocky Mountain.

Thompson Valley got first-place finishes from Levi Smela in the 800 meters (1:59.19); Gio Rodriguez and Zack Bakker in the pole vault (tie, 13-6); Brody Van Essen in the discus (148-9); and its 4×800 relay (8:09.55).

Resurrection Christian girls basketball: The Cougars finished their season as the fourth-best team in Class 3A after losing the third-place game to Denver Christian on Saturday.

The Cougars won their Great 8 game against Wiggins on Thursday, 49-39, before losing to Yuma in the semifinals Friday, 32-23. They came up short in Saturday’s third-place game, losing 63-40 to the Thunder in a rematch of last season’s championship game. Senior Bethany Vrooman and junior Jenna Kennedy led the Cougars with nine points each.

Mountain View boys volleyball: The Mountain Lions improved to 5-0 on the season with a pair of victories last week against Alameda and Forge Christian.

On Tuesday, Mountain View swept the Pirates, 25-15, 25-16, 25-20. Jose Rodriguez Rios had 13 kills for the Mountain Lions. Then Friday, they swept the Fury 25-13, 25-15, 25-21. Rodriguez Rios had nine kills in the victory.

Resurrection Christian baseball: The Cougars split their first two games of the season Saturday, coming from behind to defeat Manitou Springs before losing by two runs to Delta.

In RCS’ win over the Mustangs, they scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to overcome a 4-1 deficit for a 5-4 victory. Carter MacAlmon had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Cougars. In a 3-1 loss to Delta, Will Busby had two hits and Braedyn Budd struck out seven in five innings.
