
State Bound: Regional Wrestling Recap
A total of 30 wrestlers from Loveland, Thompson Valley, Mountain View, Berthoud and Resurrection Christian punched their tickets to this weekend’s state wrestling tournament at Ball Arena.
Combined, 22 boys and eight girls qualified for the state’s main event by finishing in the top four of their respective regional tournaments last weekend.
Here is a rundown of how those regionals played out and who will be competing this weekend in Denver:
Boys
Class 5A
Eight Loveland wrestlers made it out of a loaded Region 1 field at Horizon High School as the Red Wolves finished second in the team standings with 210.5 points.
Pomona won the tournament with 364.5 points, claiming 11 of the 14 individual titles.
Loveland had one regional champion, Christian Carroll at 144s, and two runners-up, Dominik Ortiz at 120s and Bryce Hayman at 190s. Aberym Allee qualified as a third-place finisher at 285s and four Red Wolves — Tyson Bradley (106s), Logan Ruder (132s), Luke Treacy (175s) and Beau McFall (215s) all qualified with fourth-place finishes.
Class 4A
Thompson Valley finished fourth at the Region 1 tournament held in the Eagles’ home gym and had four regional champions among seven state qualifiers.
The Eagles finished the tournament with 180 points. Pueblo East was the regional champion with 295 points.
Anthony Castillo (106s), Ty Eversman (144s), Jackson Eversman (150s) and Wyatt Malara (165s) made up Thompson Valley’s group of individual champions. Also headed to state for the Eagles are Landry Suarez, who was third at 215s; Micah Keller, who was fourth at 138s and Brayden Wall, who was fourth at 285s.
Jackson Eversman recorded the 100th pin of his career during the event.
Mountain View had three wrestlers qualify for state at the Region 3 tournament at Windsor High School.
Cameron Cosner at 126s and Kael Kreutzer at 285s both finished as regional runners-up, while Connor Mann was fourth at 215s to complete the Mountain Lions’ trio of state qualifiers.
Class 3A
Berthoud and Resurrection Christian combined to have four state qualifiers out of the Region 1 tournament at Eaton High School.
Both of the Cougars’ state qualifiers were regional champions. Sam Stockton, the defending state champion at 285s, finished first while his brother, Josh Stockton, finished first at 175s.
The Spartans also had a pair of state qualifiers with one being a regional champion. Donovan Farrell, who had been a two-time state qualifier in Iowa before moving to Colorado, won the title at 215s. He will be joined in Denver by teammate Jaxon Ficarra, who finished third at 175s.
Girls
Class 5A
Loveland qualified six wrestlers for the state tournament and finished fourth as a team at the Region 1 tournament at Poudre High School in Fort Collins.
Grand Junction Central, last year’s 5A state champion, won the team title with 258 points. The Red Wolves, last year’s 5A runner-up, finished with 131.5 points.
Loveland had a pair of regional champions in Amiyah McGee at 100s and Saydee Lussenhop at 110s. Lussenhop will return to Ball Arena looking for her second state title after winning her first last season as a freshman.
Also qualifying for the Red Wolves were Nora Lacey (second at 155s), Delaney Divine (third at 105s), Alyssa White (third at 135s) and Maddie Wilcken (fourth at 125s).
Class 4A
Berthoud had a pair of wrestlers qualify for state out of the Region 2 tournament at Yuma High School.
Julia Schnell, who finished second last year at state as a freshman, won the regional title at 120s. She will be joined in Denver by teammate Nina Sing, who was third at 115s.
