Class 4A Boys State Swim and Dive Preview
The Class 4A boys state swim and dive championships will take place Friday and Saturday at the Arvada Aquatics Center. Mountain View, Loveland and Thompson Valley will all be represented.
Diving will begin the two days of competition at 10 a.m. Friday, with swimming preliminaries scheduled for 5 p.m. that day. Swim finals will then take place at 1 p.m. Saturday. The top 10 times in the prelims will qualify for the championship final while the next 10 times will swim in the consolation final.
Here is a look at all the local qualifiers and where they stack up against the rest of the field:
Mountain View
This could be one of the best showings ever at the state meet by the Mountain Lions as they are seeded top-three in all three relays while senior freestyle sprinter JJ Phillips is seeded first in both the 50 and 100 free races.
Mountain View has set school records in all three of its relays this season. The Mountain Lions are seeded second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3 minutes, 12.79 seconds, but seven seconds behind top seed Mullin. They are also seeded third in both the 200 medley relay (1:35.53) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:28.52), behind Mullin and Glenwood Springs in both races.
Phillips, who finished third in both the 50 and 100 freestyles each of the past two seasons, is looking to finally reach the top of the podium. He has set school records in both races this season and is the top seed in both with a 20.29 in the 50 and 45.12 in the 100.
Also individually for the Mountain Lions, senior Kane Willis is seeded eighth in the 100 backstroke (53.80) and 16th in the 100 freestyle (49.40); senior Nathan Dicks is seeded ninth in the 50 freestyle (21.89) and 21st in the 100 freestyle (49.95); and senior Zac Chang is seeded 11th in the 100 butterfly (55.50) and 43rd in the 100 freestyle (52.78).
