Five athletes and five teams who made an impact on the local preps scene this past week:
Five athletes
JJ Phillips, Mountain View swimming: The Mountain Lions senior set a pair of school records and was named the outstanding swimmer at the Northern League Championships on Friday and Saturday at the Mountain View Aquatic Center.
In Friday’s preliminaries, he set new league and school records in the 50-yard freestyle (20.31 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (45.12). Saturday, he won the 50 freestyle in 20.29 and the 100 freestyle in 45.21. He was also part of Mountain View’s school record breaking 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
Ashton Daly, Loveland track and field: The Red Wolves junior won both the shot put and the discus at the Northern League meet Wednesday and Friday at Roosevelt High School in Johnstown.
Wednesday he won the shut put with a league meet record heave of 54 feet, 8.75 inches, more than six and a half feet further than the second-place finisher. Friday, he won the discus with a league meet record toss of 168-8, 16 feet further than the second-place finisher.
Madeline Clark, Mountain View track and field: The Mountain Lions senior won two events and set another school record in a third at the Longs Peak League meet Wednesday and Friday at Roosevelt.
Wednesday, she won the 400 meters in a meet record time of 56.48 seconds and Friday, she won the 800 meters in a meet record time of 2 minutes, 10.72 seconds. She also set her fourth school record of the season in the 100 meters. She ran 12.54 in the prelims and was ninth in 12.58 in the finals. She was also named the female athlete of the meet.
Brynn Torres, Loveland track and field: The Red Wolves freshman won both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the Northern League meet Wednesday and Friday at Roosevelt.
Wednesday she won the 3,200 in a league meet record time of 10:41.93, nine seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Friday, she won the 1,600 in a league meet record time of 5:01.55, two and a half seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Both times were personal bests.
Braedyn Budd, Resurrection Christian baseball: The Cougars junior returned from a season-long injury last week and had an immediate impact in his return to the lineup.
In his first game back against Berthoud on Tuesday, he hit a home run in his first at-bat. RCS went on to win 8-3. Two days later against Fort Morgan, he hit another home run while starting on the mound for the Cougars. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out 12 in six innings. RCS won 13-4.
Five teams
Resurrection Christian girls track and field: The Cougars won the Patriot League Championship meet Friday and Saturday at University High School in Greeley with 113 points.
RCS got first-place finishes from Tatum Van Pelt in the 100 (12.49), 200 (25.45) and 400 meters (57.88) and Taylor Gooch in the 300 hurdles (46.89). The Cougars also won the 4×200 relay,
Mountain View boys volleyball: The Mountain Lions clinched their first-ever berth in the Class 4A state tournament by winning both of their regional matches Friday at Mountain View High School.
Mountain View defeated Vail Christian in five sets, after being down 2-1, and then swept DSST: College View to win its first regional title. The Mountain Lions improved to 21-4 this season with those victories and will open the state tournament Thursday against Colorado Springs Christian at Fountain-Fort Carson’s Trojan Arena.
Resurrection Christian boys track and field: The Cougars won the Patriot League Championship meet Friday and Saturday in Greeley with 126 points.
The Cougars got first-place finishes from Ryan Gooch in the 100 (11.17) and 200 meters (22.55), Trevor Lim in the 400 (49.11), Lincoln Fagerlin in the 800 (1:54.95) and Mwanje Peterson in the long jump (22-2.75).
Thompson Valley boys track and field: The Eagles finished third at the Longs Peak League Championships on Wednesday and Saturday at Roosevelt with 135 points.
The Eagles got first-place finishes from Levi Smela in the 800 meters (1:53.16), Antheney Herre in the 1,600 (4:19,29), Grant Pierson in the 3,200 (10:09.16), Dominic Shideler in the high jump (6-2) and Zack Bakker in the pole vault (15-9).
Resurrection Christian girls golf: The Cougars won a pair of tournaments last week, taking first in the Patriot League Championship on Monday at Boomerang Links Golf Course in Greeley and then winning the Brush Invitational on Friday at The Course at Petteys Park in Brush.
RCS shot at 234 at the Patriot League Championship, 46 strokes better than second-place Fort Morgan. Individually, the Cougars swept the top four places with Karina Garcia first (76), Avery Stockslager second (78), Brittyn Goings third (80) and Addy Moreno fourth (82). At Brush, RCS shot a 235, 54 strokes better than Fort Morgan. Garcia and Moreno tied for first with a 78. Stockslager was third with a 79 and Goings was fifth with an 84.
